ICIW 2011 Information Warfare & “The Network Society” Mathew “Pete” Peterson 18 March 2011
“Insert Standard Disclaimer Here” • This does NOT represent the position of any agency, organization, or individual except the speaker • Opinions, valid or otherwise, are entirely mine • Errors are wholly my own • Valid points are likely completely accidental and likely quite transitory
“Foundations of my ‘world view’” • Authors/Scholars • Dorothy Denning • Winn Schwartau • Martin Libicki • Foundational Literature • “Cyberwar,” series (3 volumes, A. Campen, editor, 1996-2000) • “Time & Space in Cyber Social Reality” (S. Gotved, 2006) • “Convergence Culture: Where Old and New Media Collide” (H. Jenkins, 2006)
My “A-HA!” Moment? • Manuel Castells introduces his “theory of network society” in 1996 • “Network Society” is comprised of both “technical network” and “social network” • Interactions/Dependencies between the two interwoven “networks” would include what elements? Or, “it would look like….” • Implications for Information Warfare? • Can we conduct: • Influence Operations • Perception Management • Public Relations • Without impacting both aspects of the “network society?” Or, without planning outcomes that include both aspects of the “network society?”
“One Step Beyond” • If we do live in the “network society,” how can we fully comprehend this “society” without considering both the technical and social aspects of that society? • Can a government “shut off” the Internet completely or will the social components find a way around or through the blockage to continue their networking? • Can an organization exercising “knowledge management” ever really prevent its “knowledge” from leaving the organization, to become a component of a “knowledge integration” effort where organizations intersect/overlap?
