  1. https://www.glastonburyus.org/schools/gideon/Pages/default.aspxhttps://www.glastonburyus.org/schools/gideon/Pages/default.aspx Welcome to Math! Mrs. Shea-Florer Team 2 Room 217 2013-2014

  2. UNITS in 6th Grade Math Unit 1: Number Operations and Foundations Unit 2: Number System- Fraction Operations Unit 3: Expressions and Equations Unit 4: Ratio and Proportional Relationships Unit 5: Geometry Unit 6: Statistics and Probability Unit 7: Integers and the Coordinate System

  3. Standards for Mathematical Practice Students will be able to: 1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. 2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively. 3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. 4. Model with mathematics. 5. Use appropriate tools strategically. 6. Attend to precision. 7. Look for and make use of structure. 8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

  4. Our Daily Procedures Beat the Buzzer • Write homework in planner • Read the “I Can” statement • Take out the materials indicated and place all else under the chair • Begin ‘Beat the Buzzer’ direction

  5. Grading Categories Grading System A= 90-100 B= 80-89 C= 70-79 D= 60-69 F= below 60

  6. Things to know about TESTS • Announced exams will comprise 50% of the grade. • Students will be given time to prepare for these assessments. (3 days for a quiz; 1 week for a test) • A list of topics will be provided with reference to pages covered. • Tests will be corrected within a 2 day timeframe; most tests are corrected to be returned the next day. For that reason, written comments are limited. • Tests will no longer require a parent signature as grades will be posted and remain on the portal for parent viewing.

  7. MORE about TESTS • STAR 3-R • If a test is returned with “STAR 3-R” on the top, it is an opportunity for the student to see me by the next day’s end and arrange for a Reteaching/Relearning session. In most cases, this will also allow for a ‘Retaking’ of the assessment.

  8. A closer look at APPLICATIONSThese assignments ( 6-8 per quarter) will be announced and unannounced and will count for 35% of the grade CPQs—Check Point Quizzes: shorter assessments covering fewer concepts than a test. Some will assess computational skills; others will assess the material directly from homework assignments. STAMP Journals—Student Application of Mathematical Practices • Problem Solving Tasks open-ended tasks (take-home and in-class) that allow the student to apply learning to “real-life” situations • Reflections tasks that allow the student to apply and communicate in writing an understanding of the concepts, a thought process, or a mathematical procedure Projects both individual and group; assigned when appropriate to demonstrate understanding

  9. …usually given daily, Monday –Thursday and counts for 15% of the grade. 20 minutes maximum for all hwk assignments …graded with a CNQ 9point rubric for Completion, Neatness, Quality (see website for details). While homework is not graded for accuracy, it is expected to be reflective of effort. …expected to be turned in on the due date. Homework not turned in the due date will receive a 7 as a highest grade if turned in the next day…a 6 the day after that and down to a 0. The Portal will always have an ‘m’ (missing) for all assignments not handed in. If the student was absent or has a valid excuse, the ‘m’ will not have an accompanying grade. If the student simply did not do the assignment, you will see a ‘0’ and an ‘m’. That ‘0’ will be changed when the assignment is turned in. ABSENCE: Students have 2 days per day absent to turn in make-up work. It will be the students‘s responsibility to get make-up work upon returning to school. Homework is…

  10. Reports to Home Progress reports are an invitation to look at quarterly grades updated on the grade portal. A Principal’s message will be sent electronically. • Early October • Early December • Early March • Early May End-of-quarter report cards are sent quarterly: • Early November • Late January • Early April • End-of-year
