BACKGROUND • Nineteen years as Superintendent in Oakfield. • Worked closely with new Superintendents in the state the last five years as Coach in WASDA New Superintendents Academy. • Current director of that Academy. • Last five years worked closely with over 100 new Superintendents. • Trained by the best in Oakfield!
Jokes about Superintendents • Difference between skunk and Superintendent… • A darn shame….. • What does the average Superintendent get on his SAT’s? • What do you get when you put 32 Superintendents in the same room?
It’s all about relationships: • You cannot change anyone else’s behavior, you can only change yours. • Always assume the best—or ask for clarification. • We were given two ears and one mouth—listen twice as much as we talk.
Step 1: Get to Know Your Boss! • Find out his/her likes and dislikes. • Hobbies • Things they are passionate about. • Ask about their weekend. • Ask how meetings went—especially important ones. • Ask how they feel about their job both positives and negatives. • Where they grew up • School attended
Step 1: Get to Know Your Boss! • Find out about family: • Mom and Dad • Parents occupation • Siblings • Where located • Jobs • Family of the siblings
Step 2: Build Trust with Your Boss! • He/She must know they can trust you • Very difficult but absolutely necessary • It is a very lonely job—sometimes you are the only confidante • Always be honest with them, but diplomatically • Help them to succeed
Step 2: Build Trust with Your Boss! • When in the community, what are you saying—about the school, the central office, about him/her? • How do you answer questions from people in the community? • How do you respond when people are upset about a decision?
Step 2: Build Trust with Your Boss! • How opinions are formed: • First hand experiences • First hand experiences of someone they trust • Opinions of someone they trust • Experiences with people we respect • Pat Jackson
Step 2: Build Trust with Your Boss! • Word of Mouth Marketing—Joe Donovan • 1990’s—50-60% of decisions were made by word of mouth • Today—90% of decisions are made by word of mouth
Step 3: Take Care of Yourself! • You are no good to your boss if you are not healthy • Keep balance in your life • Help him/her keep balance in their life • Do your best to leave school issues at school • Be present in the moment--be where you are at
Step 3: Take Care of Yourself! • Stress Diet: • Breakfast • ½ grapefruit • 1 piece of whole wheat toast • 8 oz. skim milk
Step 3: Take Care of Yourself! • Stress Diet: • Lunch • 4 oz. lean chicken breast • 1 cup steamed zuchinni • 1 Oreo cookie • Herb tea
Step 3: Take Care of Yourself! • Stress Diet: • Mid-afternoon snack • Rest of package of oreo cookies • 1 quart Rocky Road Ice Cream • 1 jar hot fudge
Step 3: Take Care of Yourself! • Stress Diet: • Dinner • 2 loaves garlic bread • Large Mushroom and Pepperoni pizza • Large pitcher of beer • 3 Milky Way bars • Entire frozen Cheese Cake eaten directly from the freezer
Step 3: Take Care of Yourself! • Four basic steps: • Eat from the four food groups • Have some type of hobby • Exercise at least three times a week • Watch your stool—you want floaters, not sinkers
Step 3: Take Care of Yourself! • Attitude: • Controls your life • It dictates how others view you • It makes or breaks organizations • You have control over it!
“Do It Anyway” • People are unreasonable, illogical and self centered—love them anyway. • If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish and ulterior motives—do good anyway. • If you are successful, you will win false friends and true enemies—succeed anyway. • The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow—do good anyway. • Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable—be honest and frank anyway.
“Do It Anyway” • The biggest people with the biggest ideas can be shot down by the smallest people with the smallest minds—think big anyway. • What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight—build anyway. • People really need help but may attack you if you help them—help people anyway. • Give the world the best you’ve got and you will get kicked in the teeth—give the world the best you’ve got anyway.
Final Thoughts • You have a critical position in the district • Whether a new Superintendent succeeds can be hurt or helped by you • Give them the benefit of the doubt • Be their biggest cheerleader • What you say carries weight—please be aware of that
