  2. Role of the lord:At the top of the feudal society was the noble, called the lord, who owned the manor. • The lord had total control over his manor. • His word was the law. • He resolved any disputes and punished those who misbehaved. • Collected taxes. • Had to be fair toward his vassals.

  3. Role of the serfs: • A serf was bound to the land. He could not leave without buying his freedom, • an unlikely occurrence in the Middle Ages. • Life for a serf was not much better than the life of a slave. • A serf could not be sold to another manor. • Serfs would work three or four days a week for the lord as rent. • They would spend the rest of their week growing crops to feed their families. • Owed some portion of their own harvest to the lord, and were required to perform • other labor services upon demand. • Other serfs worked as sharecroppers. • A sharecropper would be required to turn over most of what he grew in order to be • able to live on the land. • Usually Farmers, but the village blacksmith and miller were often also serfs • 90% of the people
