Year Nine TEENAGERS NOW AND THEN
Welcome to your new unit! • This presentation aims to get you thinking critically about the topic. • Think carefully about the questions for yourselves… If you wish you may discuss the issues quietly with those sitting around you…
??? How would you describe a teenager?
Defining teenagers…. • ‘a person between the ages of 13 and 19; an adolescent’ • ‘a juvenile between the onset of puberty and maturity’ • (Both definitions taken from dictionary.com)
. • Do you agree with the relationship between teenagers and parents/adults this clip displays? Why? • Can you relate to this song?
Perception • Do you think there is a difference between the way teenagers are perceived by society and the way they really are???
Teenagers as unique… • While 13- 19 year olds are all described as teenagers, teenagers are unique, no two teenagers are alike… • Teenagers have different ideas, beliefs, values, opinions, appearance, dress style, music style, etc., etc…. • Think about the differences between you and your classmates…
While teenagers are unique… • Texts often represent the teenagers they focus on as being ‘typical’ teenagers… • Thinking of texts that you are familiar with, how are teenagers represented?
So… • Who chooses what teenagers want to see? • Do all teenagers want to see the same thing?
Teenagers in soap operas • Teenagers are portrayed through many texts, including soap operas such as Home & Away • This clip demonstrates the representation of teenagers in soap operas…
Questions this unit will focus on… • Who chooses how teenagers are represented in soap operas? • Is it a teenager voice in the soap opera? • Do teenagers write the show for teenagers?
Throughout this unit consider… • Features, language and accuracy of representation… • As a teenager, can you relate? Is this you? • How do different texts represent teenagers?
