Egg Stage Need clean, cool, clear water Dark, quiet places A redd created (or dug) by female salmon
Alevin (or Sac Fry) Look at the heart! • Yolk sac attached to the body provides food for the alevin • Yolk sac will gradually be used up • “Button-up” and emerge from the gravel
Fry • Have dark stripes or spots on their side called parr marks • Provides camoflauge so they will not be eaten • Stay together in groups • Eat tiny plants and animals
Smolt • Between 6 and 10 inches long • Spend several weeks in the estuary getting used to the salt water • Growing fast by eating shrimp, fish and plankton
Adult Salmon • Range in size from 18 to 48 inches long • Spend 3-5 years in the ocean • Ocean salmon are bright silver • Have several predators in the ocean
Spawners • Adult salmon instinctively know when to migrate back to the stream where they hatched • They stop eating and live off fat stores in their bodies • They are cargo vessels for the eggs
Dead Salmon • Most spawners die within a few weeks of spawning • Dead salmon provide nutrients for the stream
