  1. COHERENCE analysis DINA NOVITA WIJAYANTI 2003512008 DESCRIPTIVE TEXT

  2. Source: Detik- Detik Ujian Nasional Bahasa Inggris SMA/ MA Page 121 Cicik Kurniawati Lake toba is the largest crater in the world(1). Its surface area measures 1, 707 square kilometres(2). It is so large that the island sitting in its center, Samosir, has numerous towns and villages and even a lake of its own(3). Surrounding the lake, which sits at an altitude of 800 meters, is an ethereal ring of bright, rush colored mountains(4). 3. MICRO LEVEL COHERENCE 1. Theme- Rheme

  4. The classification of theme The result shows that all of the themes category into ideational theme especially of unmarked topical theme because the topical themes are subject.

  5. 2. Logico Relations

  6. Thematic progression

  7. The thematic progression among the sentences in the text above shows that 3 relations of sentences in the form of zig-zag and the others( 3) in the form of straight. It means that the text doesn’t really focus because the pattern is also combined in the form of straight. If the comment of the sentence in the form of straight , it means that there is new comment (new information) that doesn’t become the given information in the next sentence . That is the reason why the text doesn’t really focus . Good thematic progression is mostly in the form of zigzag.

  8. 3. Nominalization => Involves the transformation of process into a thing There is no nominalization found in the text

  9. Facilitates comprehension because we can’t process the whole text all at once. 4. Texture Its surface area measures 1, 707 squares kilometers.(2) It is so large that the island sitting in its center, Samosir, has numerous towns and villages and even a lake of its own.(3) Surrounding the lake which sits an altitude of 800 meters ,is an ethereal ring of bright, rush-colored mountains(4). “ area “sets up an anticipation of the sentence that follows Once you read “ area” it unfolds in time to the next sentence.

  10. 4. Texture

  11. The texture of the text is good because it tells the certain word for example “area” unfolds in time , the text tells it little by little in order to help the readers’ comprehension because when the writer processes the whole text all at once, it means that the readers will be difficult to comprehend the text. 4. Texture

  12. 6. End –Weight Principle 5. There is no rogue sentence The central island of Samosir is home to the Batak people , a unique society known for its graceful hospitality.(5) The Bataklove music, especially love songs and singing plays an unusually large role in the culture.(6) • Where the end weighted comment of the fifth sentence ( the Batak people) becomes the topic of sixth sentence. • the new information in the fifth sentence ( the Batak people) becomes the given information in the sixth sentence.

  13. It is so large that the island sitting in its center, Samosir, has numerous towns and villages and even a lake of its own(3). The central island of Samosiris home to the Batak people , a unique society known for its graceful hospitality(5). • Where the end weighted comment of the third sentence ( Samosir) becomes the topic of fifth sentence. • the new information in the third sentence ( Samosir) becomes the given information in the fifth sentence.

  14. 7. Active Construction

  15. 7. Active Construction

  16. 7. Active Construction

  17. 7. Passive Construction Allow for the possibility of placing the object of the verb in the theme slot There is no passive construction found in the text

  18. Result All of the sentences in the text are in the form of active construction, and there is no passive ones. It means it would be difficult to divert the reader’s focus on what is newsworthy in a sentence. Moreover, it would be difficult to maintain the topic consistency.

  19. 8. Cleft Sentence =>To make the sentence be easily understood by manipulating the context There is no cleft sentence found in the text

  20. MACRO LEVEL COHERENCE TOPIC Lake Toba Lexical chain Key words

  30. CONCLUSION

  31. CONCLUSION

  32. CONCLUSION The problems in the text THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE SENTENCE THE LOGICO RELATION (thematic progression)

  33. Lake Toba is the largest crater in the world. The surface area of the crater is measured by the scientist with 1,707 square kilometers. It is visited by many tourists every year. They visit there because it is so large and also has an island in it. The island is called Samosir. Samosir which is located in the center of the lake has numerous towns and villages and even a lake of its own. The towns and villages are inhabited by Batak people. They are known as the unique society because of their culture. The culture plays unusually large role especially for singing activities. MODIFIED TEXT

  34. THE THEMATIC PROGRESSION

  35. RESULT After, I have modified the text, the result shows that most of the patterns are in the form of zig-zag. If the text in the form of zigzag, it means that it focuses( the new comment from previous sentence becomes the topic in the next sentence). It will be useful to maintain the topic consistency. Talk about zig-zag pattern, we as the English teachers do not simply say to the students, ‘You need to write the topic sentence and then write the supporting details. Teachers need to teach how to develop paragraphs. This is one way to teach students how to develop a paragraph

  36. ACTIVE CONSTRUCTION VS PASSIVE CONSTRUCTION

  37. Result The number of active constructions are 4 while for the passive ones are 5. It means that the dominant construction in the form of passive. If the dominant construction is in the form of passive, it will be useful to maintain the topic consistency because it allows for the possibility of placing the object of the verb in the theme slot

  38. CONCLUSION After I have modified the text especially for the thematic progression and the construction , there is significant difference. It can be seen that the text seems to be smother(the dominant pattern is in the form of zigzag) than before and it can keep the topic consistency.
