System Analysis and Design System Planning(Overview of Feasibility) - Mr. Ahmad Al-Ghoul
Chapter Objectives • Explain the importance of feasibility study • Discuss the operational feasibility • Discuss the technical feasibility System Analysis and Design System Planning
Overview of Feasibility • A systems request must pass several tests, called a feasibility study, to see whether it is worthwhile to proceed further. • Feasibility Study determines the probability of success of proposed system’s development project and assesses the project’s • Feasibility analysis is used to aid in the decision of whether or not to proceed with the IS project. [1] System Analysis and Design System Planning
Overview of Feasibility • Helps us decide where to focus our efforts • A study to ascertain the feasibility of a new system • A study to justify the NEED for a new system and clarify potential SOLUTIONS • Gives management a basis for decisions • Feasibility study identifies direction • Analysis and models help to understand system and needs • Focus on WHAT not HOW System Analysis and Design System Planning
Overview of Feasibility • Four Categories • Operational • Technical • Economic • Schedule System Analysis and Design System Planning
Overview of Feasibility • Operational Feasibility • Operational feasibility determines if the human resources are available to operate the system once it has been installed • Users that do not want a new system may prevent it from becoming operationally feasible System Analysis and Design System Planning
Overview of Feasibility • Operational feasibility vital issues • Management support • Users support • Workforce reduction: if new system affect workforce, what will happen to affected employees • Users training • Users involving in new system • Performance decline in some system parts • Is there any risk to the company’s image • The development schedule is it suitable or there is a conflict with other company priorities • Legal and ethical issues to be considered System Analysis and Design System Planning
Overview of Feasibility • Technical Feasibility • Technical feasibility refers to technical resources needed to develop, purchase, install, or operate the system • Users’ and analysts’ familiarity with the business application area • Familiarity with technology • Have we used it before? How new is it? • Project size • Number of people, time, and features • Compatibility with existing systems System Analysis and Design System Planning
Overview of Feasibility • Points to be considered when assessing technical feasibility • Does the company have necessary hardware, software, and network resources? If not, can these resources be acquired? • Does the company have needed technical experience? • Does the proposed platform have sufficient capacity? • Will the hardware and software environment be reliable? Will it integrate with other company information systems? • Will the combination of hardware and software supply adequate performance? • Will the system be able to handle future transaction volume and company growth? Sequence Summary • A key activity in project planning is the assessment of four feasibility issues associated with the project • Feasibility Study determines the probability of success of proposed system’s development project and assesses the project’s • Feasibilities that should be examined include Operational, technical, economic, and schedule. • Operational feasibility determines if the human resources are available to operate the system once it has been installed • Technical feasibility refers to technical resources needed to develop, purchase, install, or operate the system System Analysis and Design System Planning
Sequence Summary • In this Sequence we have • Defined the feasibility study • Explained the importance of feasibility study • Defined and described the operational feasibility • Defined and described the technical feasibility System Analysis and Design System Planning
