The Agile Approach: Organizational Design & Transformation with Michael Dettmers
Michael Dettmers sought to redefine the way organizations are structured in order to achieve maximum efficiency and increase revenue. After earning his Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Concordia University, he joined Timothy Gallwey, the Founder of the Inner Game in designing programs in peak performance, executive coaching, and the human side of change management for Fortune 500 companies. With such rich experience under his belt, he went on to co-found Dettmers Industries, Inc.
There, Michael Dettmers was able to demonstrate how the agile approach to management was superior to, and more effective than, the traditional approach because in the traditional system, control was centralized with management and employees had very little power to affect creative outcomes. Moreover, employees have little, if any, control over their time schedule, production and delivery agenda, leaves, and take home pay. Work is segmented and roles are rigid, and as a result employees will never reach their true production potential.
The Agile approach to management is more flexible, offers better channels of communication, increases understanding among the team members, and enhances productivity. Employees work in small teams and are responsible for electing their leaders and schedules. Consequently, operations run more smoothly because workers have more control, are personally responsible for their results, and have a greater affinity towards their work.
Michael Dettmers personally implement and witnessed the positive outcome of implementing agile methodology at his company. Michael also emphasized the importance of continuous education and training. In doing so, employees felt that the company had a vested interest in their personal growth and development and, therefore, gave back with even more effort and commitment. By executing this new way of doing things at Dettmers Industries, Inc., he was able to increase their production capability by 60% in 2 years, while increasing employee satisfaction at work.
