  4. DVS Advisors DVS Advisor list DVS Advisor NOTE: Graduate student advising is spread across the entire DVS advising staff. If you do not know who your DVS advisor is, please call the office.

  5. Documents Required for Registration • Passport • Visa Stamp (in Passport) • I-94 card(white card in passport) • I-20 (F-1 students) • DS-2019 (J-1 students)

Maintaining Visa Status • Stay enrolled full-time • No employment (on or off-campus) until after authorization confirmed by DVS • Must report in ACES any address change within 10 days of any move. (Local Residence/Residence Hall and International–non U.S.A.) Rights and Responsibilities of Students in F-1 and J-1 Status

  16. Travel Travel Outside of the U.S. • Valid Passport • Valid U.S. Visa Stamp for Reentry • Valid I-20 or DS-2019 with updated travel signature • During program, always enter in correct status

  18. You must complete registration with DVS before applying for a Social Security Number or a NC Driver’s License. For Social Security Number: F-1 students only eligible if approved for employment. J-1 students eligible without employment. When eligible, students must present to Social Security Administration: Verification letter (visa status/job) issued by DVS Required supporting documents Trips to SSA occur every Wednesday at 10 a.m. Please arrive at International House by 9:45 a.m. For Social Security Number and Driver’s Licenses: WAIT 10 business days after entering the U.S. and registering with DVS before applying. Social Security Number and Driver’s License

Personal Integrity • Always provide truthful responses to Consular, Immigration, DVS, and University representatives • Ensure visa documents have been signed by authorized DVS personnel • Understand your responsibilities outlined in your academic program’s Honor Code NOTE: Honor Code violations can result in forfeiture of your ability to apply for post-degree work authorization and/or cancellation of your F-1 program.

  22. Final Checklist Almost Done! You now must take the following to the DVS Office Monday through Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.: • Your ORIGINAL visa documents • Your completed SEVIS E-Registration Form • Signed Acknowledgement Form • J-1 students only, the completed J Health Insurance Form • If you are a non-Duke sponsored J-1 Student (i.e. Fullbright, IIE, AMIDEAST, etc.) you must schedule an appointment with your DVS advisor directly to complete your registration. Buchanan Boulevard The US Department of Homeland Security will not know of your arrival until after you have physically reported to DVS with the above documents.
