  1. SW 3703:Gender Violence in Global Perspectives Session 2 / 30 Jan 2007

  2. Session plan • Thresholds of violence paper • Feedback review • Blog assignment • Video: Osama • Sex versus/and gender • Defining GBV

  3. Feedback review

  4. Feedback • Best part: Videos, mainly The Vienna Tribunal • Learning: Course structure, class expectations, issues of violence • Unclear areas: Issues of violence, follow up to TVT

  5. Sex versus/and Gender(Brown group) • How many sexes and/or genders are there? • What is the conventional understanding of differences between sex and gender? • What could be some of the problems with such an understanding? Are there certain groups of people who are excluded from this understanding, or who may not neatly fit into this framework?

  6. Defining GBV(Pink group) • Discuss the different definitions of gender-based violence that you came across in today’s readings. Are there any definitions that you, as a group, particularly like or dislike? • What are the different criteria used to define gender-based violence? • Some definitions of gender-based violence define it narrowly and some define it broadly. What could be the potential advantages and disadvantages of both?

  7. Defining GBV(Blue group) • Is defining gender-based violence an easy task? If yes, why… If not, why not? • What could be some of the problems in defining gender-based violence exclusively on the basis of: • Current laws? • Existing cultural norms? • Perspectives of victims?
