Problem From the title itself, the film ‘Muro-Ami’ depicts this illegal fishing practice as the main problem.
An Overview on Muro-Ami According to wikipedia.com, Muro-ami or kayakas is a Japanese-inspired illegal fishing technique that is performed by encircling a net together with pounding devices.
These pounding devices are used to smash the reefs to force the fish to come out. The net serves as an illusion to the fish which is dragged across the ocean floor to trap the fish.
Effects of Muro-ami Fishing Because Muro-Ami is done by crushing the reefs to force the fish to come out, the coral reefs die, making the fish homeless. The net worsens the problem by trapping even the small fishes, which will eventually reduce the number of the fish.
Where is it Performed? Muro-Ami is secretly done in some parts of Mindanao and Palawan. It is also performed in some Asian countries such as Indonesia and Somali.
How Can We Stop Muro-Ami? Though laws have been passed to stop this fishing practice, Muro-Ami is still secretly performed in various parts of the country. One way to stop this is by reporting to the local authorities if one has witnessed such fishing practice being used by a certain person.
