  2. Introduction • This part deals with a focus on study skills • Knowing and applying study skills makes life as a student and studying law relatively easier • This topic covers the following: • Lectures, tutorials, seminars • Note-taking • Time management

  3. Learning Outcomes • Appreciate the contribution made by personal skills of communication and organisation to the evolution of effective study habits and practices • Recognise the value of lectures and seminars and find ways to gain maximum benefit from these activities

  4. Develop an efficient and effective method of recording and organising your notes • Reflect upon your ability to manage time and adopt some useful strategies to help you to organise your studies more effectively • Deal with lecturers and colleagues in a polite and professional manner

  5. Structure of the law degree • Tends to vary between institutions • University tends to use different terminology to describe the way that the degree was structured

  6. IIUM? • Foundation in law (1 – 2 years) • After completion of pre-requisite courses, proceed to undergraduate studies at AIKOL for LL.B (Hons) / LL.B(Shariah) • Duration of study is 4 years (8 semesters) • From 1st year to 3rd year, students learn substantive laws • 4th year (final year), students learn court rules and procedures

  7. Examples of substantive laws: • Constitutional law • Contract law • Torts law • Family law • Land law

  8. Structure of teaching • Subjects taught using a combination of lectures and small group teaching methods • Lecture is a large group session in which all students taking that subject attend together to listen to a lecturer outline principles of that subject.

  9. Small group sessions is also known as tutorials or seminars • Lecturer during the lecture will assign tasks to be completed during tutorials • In addition to lectures, students will be expected to do some private study • Some universities, they teach law using activities such as debate, mooting and group projects.
