Cultural Advancement Education – • Educational Standards • Free public education • Republican Virtues – promoting certain values such as self-reliance and hard work. • Importance of women • New Scholars such as Mercy Otis Warren (history/politics), Benjamin Rush (science), Benjamin Banneker (anti-slavery).
Social Change Population – • 2.7 million in 1780 - - -12 million by 1830. • Due mainly to high birth rate and immigration. Mobility – People move from place to place. • Great opportunities to move West. • People had to adapt to a new way of life and new people.

Religious Revival • Religious movement -2nd Great Awakening started in Kentucky and Tennessee. • Importance of the congregation stressed. • Women were very active in the movement. • Many new denominations emerged • Baptists, Methodists, Adventists, Mormons, AME.
