  1. The Jurong Region Line (JRL) Is The Connecting ‘Artery ’To Build Singapore’s Second CBD Singapore is a small country with limited land resources, and its government has consistently emphasised urban planning to make the most out of the available land. In recent years, the focus has shifted towards the western region of Singapore, specifically the Jurong Lake District, to build the country's second Central Business District (CBD). The Jurong Region Line (JRL) construction is a crucial component of this development plan. Let’s delve deeper into the significance of the Jurong Region Line and how it is poised to become the connecting ‘artery’ to build Singapore’s second CBD. The Jurong Region Line - Overview The Jurong Region Line (JRL) is a 24-kilometer-long, fully automated railway line that will connect Choa Chu Kang in the northwest to Jurong Pier in the southwest. The line comprises 24 stations, of which 10 will be interchange stations with existing SMRT lines. The construction of the JRL began in 2015 and is expected to be completed in phases between 2026 and 2028. The line is part of Singapore's Land Transport Master Plan that aims to enhance the connectivity between the western region of Singapore and the rest of the island. The JRL and the Second CBD The Jurong Lake District has been earmarked as the site for Singapore's second CBD, and the construction of the JRL is a crucial component of this development plan. The JRL will connect the Jurong Lake District to other parts of Singapore and facilitate the movement of people and goods in and out of the district. The Jurong Lake District is set to become a vibrant mixed-use development that will comprise commercial, residential, and entertainment spaces. The district will also be home to a new terminus for the Kuala Lumpur-Singapore High-Speed Rail, further enhancing its connectivity with the rest of the region. The JRL will have six stations in the Jurong Lake District, providing easy access to the district's various amenities. These stations will be strategically located within walking distance of the district's key landmarks, such as the Ng Teng Fong General Hospital and the Jurong Lake Gardens. Benefits of the JRL The JRL is expected to bring about a host of benefits to the residents and businesses in the western region of Singapore, as well as the rest of the island. These benefits include: 1.Enhanced connectivity: The JRL will connect the Jurong Lake District to the rest of Singapore and facilitate the movement of people and goods. 2.Reduced travel time: The JRL will minimise travel time for commuters travelling from the western region of Singapore to other parts of the island.

  2. 3.Increased accessibility: The JRL will make it easier for residents and businesses in the western region of Singapore to access the various amenities in the Jurong Lake District. 4.Economic benefits: The development of the Jurong Lake District and the construction of the JRL are expected to bring about economic benefits, such as job creation and increased investment. Meanwhile, Thomson-East Coast Stage 3 started passenger services in 2022. SMRT Trains was awarded the Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL) contract to operate and maintain the line in stages from 2019 for an initial nine-year period. TEL will add 43km and 32 new stations to the existing train network. SMRT Chairman, Seah Moon Ming, said: “We are also working closely with LTA and system suppliers to prepare for a smooth opening of Stage 3 of the new Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL). Our Buses team has likewise performed well, maintaining high service and reliability standards.” SMRT will also roll out Project Overwatch to the Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL). Conclusion The Jurong Region Line (JRL) is a vital component of Singapore's plan to develop the Jurong Lake District into the country's second Central Business District. The JRL will enhance connectivity between the western region of Singapore and the rest of the island and facilitate the movement of people and goods in and out of the district. The construction of the JRL is expected to bring about a host of benefits, including reduced travel time, increased accessibility, and economic benefits. As such, the JRL is poised to become the connecting ‘artery ’to build Singapore’s second CBD.
