What is a network? A network is when 2 or more objects sharing data and/or information and resources.Examples include: • A group of people having a conversation • A railway system A network can be two or more objects (inanimate and human); a network does not have to consist of computers.
There are several basic types of networks LAN-Local Area Network Local connection of computer and peripherals (equipment e.g. printers) that are connected by a common media e.g. cables. Usually located in just one building. Larger LANs may consist of two or more LANs linked together.
WAN- Wide Area Network • A wide area network can be as small as a few miles or as large as the globe! An example being the internet. • Computer on WAN communicate using a variety of media including microwave, satellite, telephone network and cables.
MAN-Metropolitan Area Network A data network built to serve an area the size of a large city. PAN- Personal Area Network Usually over an area of a few meters, a PAN is the communication between devices close to the one person (including the communication between computers, personal assistants or telephones). PANs can also connect to a higher level of network, such as the internet. Devices used in a Pan do not necessarily have to belong to the user.
