Fast Response Oil Spill Containment Vessel Lawren Best, Paal Jetlund Thorsager, Jen Alloway, Silas Spence
Background • Increase in tanker traffic in Hecate strait, current condensate shipping with expected oil export in the near future • Tankers all the way up to Kitimat due to proposed new onshore LNG and crude oil terminals • No dedicated oil spill equipment situated in the area, therefore a vessel is needed
Current Vessels Rozema Bay Class • 48ft x 16ft • Med endurance • Med range • 26knots max. • Integrated skimming • 1320hp Kvichak Coastal Class • 54 ft • Low endurance • Low range • 30 knots max • No skimming capacity • No storage Burrard Clean No.8 • 49ft x 15ft • Low endurance • Low range • 22knots max. • No skimming capacity • 800hp
Vessel Responsibilities • 1) Arrive on scene quickly • “An hour now can save a month later” • 2) Deploy containment boom • Consolidate oil so skimming can begin • 3) Undertake small-scale skimming • Clean-up small spills or provide auxiliary skimming capacity
Owner Requirements • Top speed of 30 knots, cruising speed of 28 knots. • Range of 300 nm at cruising speed, and an endurance on scene of 4 days. • LOA ~40-65 ft, beam 18~20 ft • Capable of containing and recovering a 1000 litre spill • Large working deck with space to store and deploy the boom.
What will our vessel do? • Skim and deploy boom • Survive Sea State 6 • Crew of 3-4 • Hold a min. 1000 litres of spill oil
Hull form • Attended SNAME annual meeting in FL where USCG fast monohull tow tank data was presented • 4 Models of varying L/B, β, Δ • Provided a preliminary resistance estimate for different hulls through scaling for 60 ft vessel 120Render 120 Body
AutoPower Resistance Estimation 28kts Cruise & 44 Tons & 8m LCG Results for 120 Deadrise Angle
Propulsion Package • Caterpillar C18 Engines • 747kW (1001BHP) @ 2300rpm • 1718kg (3788lbs) Dry Weight • Marine Transmission • TwinDisc MGX-5135 A @ 10° (2.52:1) • Low Speed Feature for Harbour Maneuverability and Low Speed Towing
Preliminary Propeller Sizing • Tested B Series and KCA Propellers @ 80% MCR • B Series: • 4 Blade Fixed Pitch • D=0.91m • P/D = 1.066 • OW η=0.655 @ 830rpm • KCA Series: • 3 Blade Fixed Pitch • D=0.96m • P/D = 1.131 • OW η=0.651 @ 830rpm
Vessel 3D Model Construction • Rhino 3D used to generate hullform and later add superstructure and interior to hull • Allowed optimization of interior space by using multiple floor levels and the hull sides to our advantage
Lower Deck Arrangement • 3 Bunks Forward • Large Machinery Space • Twin Oil Skimmers • Gen Set
Upcoming Project Tasks • Seakeeping Analysis • Structural Analysis • Stability Analysis • Maneuverability Analysis • Weight Estimating • Final Costing
