In times past, warriors placed their ears near the ground to hear approaching enemy horses. How does this work? Strike the tuning fork on your shoe. Place it in the bowl of water. What happens? Why? Strike the tuning fork and place it next to your ear. What happens? Why? Tap a pencil on the inside of the bowl. What do you hear. Put your ear to the container and tap the bowl again. Now what do you hear? Tap the table with your pencil. What do you hear? Put you ear to the table. Now what do you hear? Which sound was loudest? Which sound was the softest?
The sound is louder when hear through the table (A SOLID) and softest when heard through the air (A GAS). When it is heard through water it is somewhere in between (A LIQUID). The denser the material is , the quicker the sound waves travel through it. This is because dense material is more elastic and can carry sound waves more efficiently.
