ON A SIDE NOTE… SunGard Culture
WHAT IS MIS TO US • It is the application of people, procedures, and technologies — collectively, the information system—to business problems • It focuses on the best way to enable the organization to meet its goals and business challenges • Its purpose is to analyze, design, develop, and implement information strategy to solve business problems • It requires people that have strong analytical skills, business background, and technology savvy to make business processes more productive • It requires knowledge of organizational structures, business objectives, and business operations (including processes and the flow of data between processes), how to communicate effectively with users, and how to design systems that support their activities • It requires up-to-date and evolving knowledge of technology to facilitate selection of the appropriate technologies for implementation of information systems • At its core, it is Problem Solving
WHAT DO MIS GRADUATES DO • Solve Business Problems • Every business requires people that have the ability to: • Dissect a problem, • Analyze the parts, • Layout a plan for resolution, and • Work to implement its solution. • The strength of MIS majors lies in their ability to work with both business & technology managers and users in an organization to develop, implement, and manage the information infrastructure. Bridge the gap between Business and Technology
WHAT DO MIS GRADUATES DO • Career Opportunities Include (but are not limited to):
SIX COMMON MYTHS ABOUT MIS CAREERS • All I will be is a “Code Monkey” • You never get to work with people • You do the same thing day after day • IT careers aren’t fun because you don’t get to be creative • Programming is the number one skill needed to be successful in IT • All IT jobs are being outsourced MYTHS
HOW IS THE CURRENT JOB MARKET • 47% year over year increase in recruitment of IT graduates by leading companies – a Texas university • “Today, MIS / Technology is one of the fastest growing segments of the economy and employers are vying for qualified candidates” – John Skubiak • “The most in demand positions…will be hybrids of management and technology” – National Center on Education & The Economy • Consulting, retail, and petroleum companies are looking for new hires. As a result, many of these industries offer sizeable salary offers to new graduates. – careerbuilder.com • “MIS / Computer Science graduates will be in greater demand than ever over the next 15 years. If there’s a field to go into, this is it.” – Bill Gates • While accounting jobs will grow at the same rate as the national average for all jobs, MIS job growth is estimated to grow at a rate 3 or more times as fast as the national average through 2012 – Bureau of Labor Statistics 2006 These are trends. The current job market is tougher than it has been in several years
HOW IS THE CURRENT JOB MARKET • 2008 Graduates – Nationally
HOW IS THE CURRENT JOB MARKET The Perfect Storm – The Perfect Opportunity for MIS • Three major factors:1) Baby boomer retirements2) A shortage of IT graduates3) Job growth rates for IT are 3X+ the national job growth average These create a “perfect storm” for graduates • More than 40% of the technology workforce will reach retirement age by 2010! • On average, universities are producing only 30% of the IT graduates that they did in 2001!
WILL I HAVE A JOB WHEN I GRADUATE Unfortunate Timing: Headlines 1/26/2009 “Caterpillar to cut 20,000 jobs” “Home Depot to cut 7,000 jobs” “Spring to cut 8,000 jobs” “U.S. Business Climate worst in 27 years” • What should I do? • What does this mean to you? • How can I compete with experienced job seekers? • Is anyone hiring graduates with no experience? The jobs are there, it’s just much more competitive!
WILL I HAVE A JOB WHEN I GRADUATE • What should I do? • You’ve started by majoring in MIS • Work hard (external job included) • Prepare for the interview process! Practice! Study! • Remember, you are ALWAYS interviewing with a potential employer • What does this job market mean to you? • You must be aggressive • “Survival of the fittest” is about adaptation • Stand out from the crowd • Be “nervous”. • Consider resilient industries in down times Any Job You Have Now Can Be The Beginning Of Something Big
WILL I HAVE A JOB WHEN I GRADUATE • How can I compete with experienced job seekers? • Start thinking in ‘career mode’ TODAY. • Get out of your comfort zone • Begin resume building: get a job. • Learn from current jobs • Be willing to do whatever it takes • Is anyone hiring graduates with no experience? • YES Start Your Career Today, as an MIS Major at Baylor University
COMPANIES HIRING BAYLOR MIS GRADUATES (SAMPLING) • SunGard Consulting Services, and
YOU HAVE YOUR JOB, NOW WHAT? • Make yourself invaluable • Businesses are in business to make money • Work to be viewed as being part of the revenue generation side of the business, not the cost side • Do whatever it takes • Learn as much as possible about as many things as possible • There are three things you take with you everywhere you go: • Your Ethics & Moral Fiber (Character) • Your Reputation • Your Personal Network
WHAT DID WE LEARN • Tremendous career opportunities exist in IT over the coming 10 years; both for incoming graduates and for experienced employees. • IT career opportunities are much broader than being a “Code Monkey”; at the core you are a problem solver looking at the entire business and envisioning solutions through people, process, and technology! • Problem solving ability, business acumen, leadership, communication, and organizational skills are as important as technology skills in MIS career fields. • Getting that first job is tougher now, but still very possible. Be aggressive! • Your moral fiber, character, and reputation are everything
QUESTIONS Will this be on the test? What should I do with my life? Where do thoughts go? Did I leave my car lights on? Do I have to raise my hand? Why is so much news just “info”-tainment?
