Roof Plan Components Chapter 22 Roof Plan Types Roof Shapes Roof Materials Vented soffit
Roof Plan Types • Roof plans are used to show the shape of the roof including roofing materials, vents, and any other objects located on the roof • Simpleroof plans show roof vents, ridges, valleys, direction of slope. • Complexroof plans show individual roof members, connectors, etc.
Roof Pitch/ Slope • Slope or roof pitch is the description of the angle of the roof as horizontal run and vertical rise • Pitch is represented with a fraction which converts to an angle • Simple Approach example
Roof Pitch/ Slope • 10/12 vs. 4/12 (6/12 typical)
Simplified Version we will do in this class Required Elements: • Dimensions at overhangs • Hip and Valley noted • Pitch noted • Roof Vents
Flat Roof Shape • Economical • Built with slight pitch so water can run off • Parapet (false wall) is built around the roof
Shed Roof Shape • Less drainage problems compared to flat roof • Can be built at any pitch (no shallower than 4/12 in our climate
Gable Roof Shape • Two shed roofs meet at a ridge • Two or more gables meet to form a hip or valley
A Frame Roof Shape • Rafters are used as supporting walls • The structure appears to form the letter “A”
Gambrel Roof Shape • Traditional shape from colonial period • Upper roof is greater pitch than lower roof • Reduces cost of exterior building materials
Hip Roof Shape • Eliminates roof mass • Structure appears smaller • Two hips form a valley
Dutch Hip Roof Shape • Combination of hip and gable roof • Center is similar to a gable roof • Ends are similar to a hip roof
Mansard Roof Shape • Similar to a gambrel but angled lower roof is on all four sides • Flat roof on top
Dormer Roof Shape • Opening in a roof to allow for a window • Used in gable or hip roof
