Transitional Provisions • Work will not be subject to the Part B amendments, IF - Before 6 April 2007 • A Building Notice has been given, or Full Plans have been deposited. (whether or not plans have been approved) • An Initial Notice, Public Bodies Notice, or amendment notice has been issued.
Smoke and heat alarms • Direct reference to grade and category of BS 5839-6: 2004 • Mains powered with battery backup Extensions • Provide smoke alarms where habitable rooms are provided above ground level or if at ground level where there is no final exit from the new room
Domestic sprinklers • As a compensatory feature • As an alternative approach for:- • Houses with more than 1 floor 4.5m above ground level • Loft conversions • Space separation
Fire Doors • Self closing devices • Not required on fire doors within dwellings except:- • Doors to integral garages • Entrance doors to flats (Vol. 2 requirement)
Loft Conversions • Alternative approach no longer accepted. • Protected stair and smoke alarms required • Upgrading of existing doors may be possible • Alternative suggestions for open plan layout • Cut off door • Escape window • Sprinkler protection
Garages • Integral garages • Sloping floor OR • Integral step
Galleries • Alternative exit/egress window: OR • Overlook 50% of room below • 7.5m max travel to head of stair • 3m max from foot of stair to room exit • Cooking facilities remote or enclosed Also applies to dwellinghouses
Sprinklers in flats • Sprinklers to be provided in all flats in blocks where some part of the block has a floor over 30m above ground. • Limitation of BS 9251 to buildings under 20m in height can be ignored.
Small Premises • Guidance from BS 5588-11 has been incorporated into text of the A.D.
Care Homes • Guidance included for progressive horizontal evacuation • Where sprinklers provided • Closers not required on bedroom doors • >10 beds permitted in protected area • More than one bed per bedroom • Management procedures to be part of fire safety strategy
