  1. ACADEMIC SKILLS IN ENGLISH-1ENG 101 ECONOMICS AND ADMINISTRATIVE SCIENCES 2011-2012

  2. The Course Aims at the following: To develop students’ academic listening and speaking skills so that they can follow their department courses better. This course will NOT teach you English, instead it will give you opportunities to practice the language and accomplish assigned tasks.

  3. ENG 101 (FIRST SEMESTER) Will help you to become better listeners and speakers of English

The Listening Module • There are 4 Units in the Listening Module • At the end of each unit, you will be assessed based on your class performance (CPG) • These units will develop your listening skills by showing you abbreviations, different ways of note-taking, getting the main idea of a lecture and many others. • You will need all of these skills in your department courses.

  7. The Speaking Module • There are 4 Units in the Speaking Module • At the end of each unit, you will be assessed based on your class performance (CPG) • These units will develop your speaking skills, by showing ways of doing research, organizing a talk and giving a presentation in front of an audience. • Do not forget that your department teachers may ask you to give presentations in different courses on different topics. • 20% of your overall grade will be based on your performance in your final presentation.

  8. Your presentation will be evaluated on the following basis: • Content • Sequencing • Questions • Fluency • Vocabulary • Delivery

  9. Academic Word List (Mini Dictionary) • In the reading passages of your book, you will see words in bold.

  10. Academic Words • These words are samples of words that are being widely used in the academic world. • You will be asked to learn these words, their synonyms and definitions. Your written exams will have a vocabulary component where you will be asked to either use some of the given words or give their synonyms. • You will find these words in the mini dictionary starting at the end of your coursebook.

  11. Attendance • Attendance is obligatory • If you miss more than 25% (16 hrs) of total class hours, you will not be allowed to take the final exam.

  12. Assessment • Midterm (26 November, 2011) 30% • Presentation (26-30 December, 2011) 20% • Final Exam (09-21 January, 2012) 30% • CPG (8 WEEKS) 20%

What is CPG?Class Participation Grade • 20% of your course grade • Based on tasks done during class and assignments given as homework • Your willingness to participate in class work will help you to learn the skills better • Your willingness in participating in class work will help you get a higher CPG

Examples • 1) Canan did OK in class and handed in an OK paper but missed the first two lessons –GRADE = 2 (Not all tasks completed but participation was to a satisfactory level.) • 2) Ceyhan sat in class staring out of the window all week and handed in a poor paper - GRADE = 1 unsatisfactory participation and more than one tasks incomplete (didn’t do tasks in class) • 3) Selin didn’t participate very much in class all week but did all the tasks and gave a presentation. - GRADE = 2. All tasks completed but unsatisfactory performance.

  16. CPG is… • A grade that encourages your participation in class activities • NOT a randomly given grade based on teachers intuitions or likes and dislikes

  17. Punctuality • Students are expected to come to classes ON TIME. Do not forget that your teacher has the right not to accept you in if you are late.
