  1. Mari Basom Libr 150 Reference Book Analysis Spring 2009/600’s

  2. Citation and Call number • Waller, James. Drinkology: The Art and Science of the Cocktail. New York : Stewart, Tabori & Chang, 2003. • 641.874 WAL

  3. Arrangement • On page 11, the book begins with a description of what your bar says about you. Then it proceeds to describe the “tools of the trade”, starting with glassware. • It continues with “basic bar tools” such as a shaker or a citrus reamer and then the type of liquor to have on hand. • Page 34 starts “A crash course in bartending” with tricks of the trade to make any cocktail. • Each chapter is a certain alcohol and includes pages of cocktail recipes.

  4. Indexing • The book begins with a Table of Contents. Your bar, Basic Bartending, Beer, Brandy, Champagne, Gin. Liqueurs, Rum, Tequila, Vodka, Whisky, Wine, Frozen and Blended drinks, Hot drinks, punches and eggnogs, Nonalcoholic mixed drinks. • Ending with a Glossary on page 371 and Drinkology favorites on 375 and the index in alphabetical order Abbey cocktail – Zombie) on 377.

  5. Scope • OCLC Number: 52214682 • ISBN: 158479304X 9781584793045 • Description: 384 p. : ill. ; 18 cm. • Responsibility: James Waller ; with contributions by Andrew Miller ; illustrations by Glenn Wolff

  6. Currency • I feel this books currency is relevant. It was published in 2003, only five years ago. Even if you found this book at a used book sale 10 years from now it would still be relevant. These are classic recipes and bartending tips. Not much has changed , nor do I think it will.

  7. Intended Purpose • According to the back inner sleeve…… • “Elegantly packaged and entertainingly written, Drinkology reveals the secrets anyone-budding bartender or experienced mixologist-needs to know to create a full repertoire of classic cocktails and cutting edge concoctions.”

  8. Authority • James Waller is a writer and editor in Brooklyn, NY. His previous books include The Moviegoer’s Journal, The Well- Bred Dog, and The Well-Bred Cat.

  9. Formats & Special Features • It appears this title is only in book format and English. • A collection for more than 400 drinks. • Specially designed for use at the bar with a ribbon marker for keeping tabs on your favorite cocktail. It also has a waterproof cover to protect it from mishaps. • A sewn binding which lets it lie flat when opened.

  10. Personal Impression • I liked the compact size of this book and the color of it was attractive. • I also enjoyed all of the recipes. There are many I want to try. I was also grateful for the non-alcoholic section, don’t want to get carried away. • I found the chapter on glassware informative and the section on party planning handy.

  11. Reference Uses • What is in a Martini? A classic Martini has 2oz Gin, ½ oz Dry Vermouth, olives or a lemon twist. • How do I make simple syrup? Combine two cups granulated sugar and one cup of water in a saucepan. Stir, bring mixture to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer five minutes, remove form heat and allow to cool.
