  1. A webquest focusing on fact and opinion using spiders as a topic for inquiry By: Janet Pages As a matter of fact…or is it?

  2. Introduction • How do you feel about spiders. Some of you will say “they’re scary”, and others will say “ they’re cool”. It's OK for one person to think one thing about spiders, and another to think something different. These are opinions - what people think. We also know basic facts about spiders. For example, spiders have 8 legs. • Of all the sentences and statements you've been told and have read throughout your life, do you think you would ever know the difference between the ones that were facts and the ones that were opinions?

  3. Task • In groups of two you will use the World Wide Web to locate information about spiders. You will learn the difference between fact and opinion. • You and your partner will create a fact and opinion chart about spiders using several of the websites and printouts provided on this webquest.

  6. Evaluation • Each student will complete a rubric about their partner.

Conclusion • After the children researched the ten sites provided to them on the World Wide Web by the teacher, they should be able to easily read a statement or text and determine whether the information is "a matter of fact... or opinion.“ • You've done a SPIDERIFIC job in researching, forming an opinion, and sharing with others creatively!
