FRED Free Reading for Success
What is FRED? FRED = free read. FRED books are chosen by you to be read outside of class or during designated FRED times. The purpose of FRED is to increase your reading ability at your own level and pace, and to do it with books and materials that interest you.
How does FRED work? • Choose a book from our FRED list, from our library, or anywhere of your choice. • Submit a FRED Request form so that I can review your choice. • After your FRED book has been approved, add it to your FRED Goal Sheet. This will help you set personal goals for your reading and keep track of your progress. • When you’re done with your FRED book, fill out a FRED One-Pager.
Choosing a book • If you don’t know where to start, think about what types of books you have enjoyed in the past. Try choosing similar books, books by the same author, or in the same genre. • Ask your friends for recommendations. • Be sure to choose a book on or slightly above your reading level. • If you need ANY help selecting a book, please see me during FRED time.
FRED Request Form This form asks you the title and author of the book you’d like to read, why you chose this book, and what you hope to experience or learn from it. All FRED forms are located on top of the bookshelf.
FRED Goal Sheet • Keeps track of the books you read • Sets goal of how many books you will read • Keeps you on task • Shows you how far you’ve come!
FRED One-Pager • Asks for details about the book (author, pages, etc.) • Asks you to rate the book on a scale from 1-10 • Asks you to think critically about what you’ve read and answer two short essay questions. • Asks you to sign an honor code agreement stating that you read the book. • Worth 30 points
