Life Cycle/ Reproduction • The average life span of a Northern Cardinal is fifteen years • The female cardinal lays two to five eggs at a time • She will lay eggs 2 to 4 during a year • The female lays eggs, the male fertilizes them, the eggs hatch, they feed the babies • Males sometime mate with more then one female
Habitat • The Northern Cardinal feeds off fruits and seed from bird feeders in peoples backyards • The Northern Cardinal is nicknamed the “backyard bird” due to its eating habits • Northern Cardinals are found all over northern America spreading from Mexico to southern Canada
Special Characteristics • Cardinals are non-migratory birds that are attracted to bird houses and feeders especially those with a great supply of food • The Female sings can tell the male to go get food if he far from the nest • The cardinal is considered as the only red bird with a crest in the entire United States • They are know as song birds • They get rid of certain insects such as beetles, grasshoppers, and dragon flies
