Basic facts • There is just one dentist available for 300 000 people in rural areas • One in 5 children living in homes with incomes below the federal poverty level (FPL) had a dental visit for dental pain or a related problem • In India, periodontal disease affects about 90% of the population, while dental caries affects 60% to 80% of children

  3. Kids in pain • In south India they conducted an experiment with 838 12 year olds that attended this school. The conclusion was “Six per cent of the 12-year-old school children(50 kids) had traumatic dental injuries to the teeth

  4. Systemic Disease • Dental care doesn’t only affect the mouth, it has been shown to affect a person’s overall health • Several epidemiological studies have linked poor oral health with cardiovascular disease • Cardiovascular disease is a direct infection of the blood vessel walls. Bacteria on the teeth and gums could travel through the bloodstream and attach to fatty plaques in the arteries, making the plaques become more inflamed. If one of the plaques bursts and causes a blood clot to form, it can cause a heart attack or stroke

Oral cancer is the 11th most common cancer in the world, accounting for 267,000 new cases and of which two-thirds are observed in developing countries • A high incidence of oral cancer is observed in the Indian subcontinent, which accounts for a third of the world burden
