  7. For your reference: Host Family A form of accommodation offered by a family living in the country which the new students visit. Home stay, an alternative housing to hotel or short term apartment living, provides a comfortable home environment with the opportunity for personal interaction. It also gives you the opportunity to experience American lifestyle and culture in the most direct way. To become a host family they must meet certain criteria: 1) Host(s) must live near a bus stop and not more than five-seven miles to a school. 2) Host(s) must offer a safe and secure environment for a student. 3) Offer clean accommodations in a private bedroom, with a bed and a desk. 4) Family must be interested in cultural exchange and willing to integrate their student into some of their daily activities.   10. Debating You’re going to fulfill a debating task. Members: There should be two teams (A, B) with the equal number of participants. One will serve as captain of the debate team. (Captains draw lots to decide which team argues for or against the selected topic.) Rules: Round 1 Step 1) The captain of team A gives a speech in a given time (one or two minutes), declaring the position of the team. Then the captain of team B takes his/her turn. Step 2) The debaters in each team speak taking turns following an A1-B1, A2-B2 order, so that the time and number of turns for each team and team members are equal. They should analyze their viewpoints, give arguments and make efforts to refute the other side’s viewpoints. Book 1-Unit 8

  11. Debating Round 2 In the second round, the captain of team B speaks first. The other debaters argue in the B1-A1, B2-A2 order. In this round, the debaters in each team mainly make rebuttals of the opponent’s statements and try to defend their own argument. This round is very crucial for the result, so all members should try their best to display their talents, eloquence, and tactics. Comments: The instructor, or the audience, will give comments on their proofs, conclusions, language, thought, and organization and then decide which team is the winner according to the performance of the two teams. Debating Now debate on the following topic: College Students Living Off Campus (According to an official statistics, the number of college students living off campus in Beijing has increased by four times between 1997 and 2001. This is undeniably true of many other places in China.) Book 1-Unit 8
