Major Skeletal Muscles Allow the body to move
Pectoralis Muscles • Major
Pectoralis Muscles • Minor
Pectoralis Muscles • FX—A-Dduction • EX movement—Bench press wide grip
Deltoid Muscle • Anterior (front)—flexes and medially rotates the arm
Deltoid Muscle • Middle portion-A-Bducts the arm • Allows you to lift the arm up to the side
Deltoid Muscle • Posterior (back)—extends and laterally rotates the arm
Rotator Cuff Muscles • Supraspinatus • Infraspinatus • Teres Minor • Subscapularis
Supraspinatus • Assists deltoid in A-Bduction
Infraspinatus • Laterally rotates arm • Helps keep head of humerus in the socket of the scapula
Teres Minor • Same as infraspinatus
Subscapularus • Medially rotates arm • A-Dducts arm • Helps hold head of humerus in socket of scapula
Sternocleidomastoid • Rotation • Turning the head
Rectus Abdominis • Flexes the trunk • As in a crunch
Obliques • External—lateral flexion • Reaching across body
Obliques • Internal—lateral flexion and rotation • Reaching across body
Transverse Abdominis • Compresses abdomin • Sucking in gut
Diaphragm • Raises and lowers the lungs • Allows for expansion and contraction of the lungs for breathing
Iliopsoas • Hip flexion • Walking
Gluteus • Maximus • Hip extension—riding a bike
Gluteus • Minimus • Hip extension, lateral rotation, AB-duction
Quadriceps Muscles • Rectus Femoris • Vastus Lateralis • Vastis Medialis • Vastus Intermedius
Rectus Femoris • Hip flexion • Knee extension
Vastus Lateralis, Medialis, & Intermedius • Knee Extension
Sartorius • Main Fx—Hip flexion
Trapezius • Elevates Scapula • Shrug shoulders
Latissimus Dorsi • A-Dduction of the arm • “Lat” Pulls
Levator Scapulae • Lateral flexion of neck • Moving head from side-to-side
Rhomboids • Major • Minor • Elevation of scapula—pinching scapulas together
Biceps Brachii • Flexes forearm • Arm curls
Triceps Brachii • Extension of forearm • Dips
Brachialis • Flexion of forearm
AB-ductors of the Hand • Spread fingers out—AB-duct
AD-ductors of the Hand • Brings fingers close together
Extensors of the Hand • Pulls hand upward
Flexors of the Hands • Pull the fingers and hands down
Hand/Forearm Pronators • Flips palm of hand downward
Supinators of the Hand/Forearm • Flips the hand so the palm faces up. • Brachioradialis
Hamstring Muscles • Flex the knee • Extend the hip
Quadriceps Muscles • Flex hip • Extend knee • See slides 22-24
Gastrocnemius • Plantar flexion of the foot • Points toes downward • Calf raises
Soleus • Plantar flexion of foot
Tibialis Anterior • Dorsiflexes the foot • Pulls toes toward tibia
