Currently,Indiaisthethird-largestdomesticaviationmarketin theworld.Variousstudiespredictthatby2024-25,thecountry willsurpasstheUKtobecomethethird-largestairpassenger marketglobally.Aviationexpertsviewtheextensivenetwork expansionplansofforeigncarriersasatestamenttothe growingconfidenceinthetremendousgrowthpotentialof India’scivilaviationsector.Theyalsobelievethatthiswill catalysefurthereconomicgrowth,spurinfrastructure developmentandpromotenationaldevelopment.

Networkextensionwillmakeairtravelmoreaccessibleandaffordablefor passengers.Itwillenhanceconnectivitytonewerdestinations,provide substantialeconomicandsocialbenefitsbypromotingtourismand tradeactivities.Further,bycreatingjobsandsupportingremote communities,itwillhelpthecountrymeetthesurgeindemand, especiallyduringpeakseasons,”saysJaideepMirchandani,chairmanof aviationmajorSkyOne. Healsohighlightedthattheproposedcodesharingplanswillstrengthen domesticaviationinthecountry.“Codesharingwillallowanairlineto bookitspassengersonpartnercarriers,providingtraveltodestinations whereitcurrentlyhasnopresence.Itwillhelpthemoffermoretravel optionsforcustomers,enhancetheirserviceofferings,and open upnew domesticandinternationalnetworksanddevelopthesocio-economic growthandspreadacrossthecountry,”saidMrMirchandani.

ThedomesticnetworkexpansioncanalsohelpstrengthentheGovernment’sRegionalConnectivityScheme(RCS-UDAN), whichismainlyaimedatmakingairtravelaccessibletoisolatedcommunitiesandpromotingruraleconomic development.“AnotherkeyprospectliesinthegrowthoftheMaintenance,Repair,andOverhaul(MRO)sector.Inlinewith theaviationsector’sgrowth,itwillprovidestrategicinvestors,originalequipmentmanufacturers(OEMs)andleadingglobal MROplayerswithmoreinvestmentopportunitiesintheIndianMROsegment,”addedMrMirchandani. HealsopointedouttheneedforpolicydecisionstomakeconditionsfavourableforbothforeignandIndianairlines.For instance,theDirectorateGeneralofGSTannouncedtheimpositionofGSTonservicesprovidedbyforeignairline headquarterstotheirIndianbranches.TheInternationalAirTransportAssociation(IATA)hasalreadyopposedthis move. MirchandanibelievessuchstepscouldsignificantlyincreaseoperationalcostsforforeignairlinesinIndia,andaffecttheir expansionplans.Heconcludedwith“Ihopetheregulatoryauthoritieswilltakeanappropriatedecisioninthisregard,which willmutuallybenefitbothIndianandforeigncarriers,”.
