Pay attention to all the adverbs Shaw uses to describe his behavior. • What is the “new small talk”? • What will happen to Clara if she uses the “new small talk”? • Does Eliza win the bet? • Of what fairy tale does Act III remind you?

  6. Wednesday, March 6Today’s Objective: Today I will show what I understand about characters’ attitudes about wealth, poverty, and morality. I will show this by participating in a discussion. • WU: On a spectrum from amorality to integrity, where would you place these characters and why: Alfred Doolittle, Higgins, Eliza, and Pickering. • Airplane discussion over Acts II & III • Write/Pair/Share – What does Alfred Doolittle mean by the term “middle class morality”? How is his belief shaped by the culture and time in which he lives? • HW: None http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/19/Cover-play1913.jpg

  7. Acts II and III Discussion • Contrast Clara’s reactions to Eliza in Acts One and Three. • Contrast Higgins’ and Pickering’s attitudes towards Eliza. • What is the concept of middle class morality as described by Alfred Doolittle on pages 55-56? • What is the one word that you think best describes Higgins? Why? • What do you think will happen to Eliza now that the bet is won? On what evidence do you base your opinion? • What do you think motivates Higgins’s consuming interest in Eliza? Support your answer with details from the play. • Describe the relationship between Higgins and his mother. In your opinion, does it have a positive or negative effect on him? Explain. • Recall that Shaw often reveals character through juxtaposition (looking at side by side). What is illuminated by the juxtaposition of the four women at Mrs. Higgins’s house? Identify the parallels and contrasts that you see.
