Shiatsu By Sensei Robert New
A brief history of shiatsu • There are several styles of shiatsu – • Such as Zen, Namikoshi, tsubo therapy & acupressure. • The style we practice at Tai Shi Kai is Namikoshi style shiatsu.
Namikoshi Shiatsu • Founded by Tokujiro Namikoshi (D.O.B. 3rd Nov. 1905) • At age 7 he moved from Shikoku to Hokkaido. • Source: The Complete Book of Shiatsu Therapy by Toru Namikoshi
Background • This was a move from a warm to a cold climate. • His mother developed multiple rheumatism (arthritis). • No doctor or medicine in their village. • Tokujiro had 3 brothers and 1 sister.
Background • They each took turns massaging their mother. • His mother told Tokujiro that “his hands feel best.” • He started using 80% stroking/rubbing and 20% pressing. • He soon found that reversing these percentages worked best.
A new type of therapy • Namikoshi eventually cured his mother (by stimulating the suprarenal body to secrete cortisone, an anti-inflammatory which cures/treats rheumatism.) • Namikoshi continued to refine and explore his therapy and eventually • He went on to found the Japan Shiatsu Institute. • Shiatsu is distinct from massage – its a bit like calling kata a dance.
CHARACTERISTICS OF SHIATSU • Diagnosis and therapy are combined • Only hands and fingers are used – no mechanical devices or medicines. • No side effects (other than beneficial ones) • No age limits – can be performed by and performed on people of any age. • Treats whole body therefore cause not just symptoms.
