  1. Knowledge into Action#K2AEvent Masterclass Day 1 18th March 2014 “The great end of life is not knowledge but action” T.H. Huxley 1825-1895 Dr Ann Wales Programme Director for Knowledge Management Ann.wales@nes.scot.nhs.uk

  2. Overview • To build understanding, and provide practical strategies, on how to translate knowledge into practice.

  3. Why Knowledge into Action? • Values: Care that is: • Safe • Effective • Person-Centred

  4. The challenge 45% of care is not based on on available evidence. (McGlynn, 2003; Grol 2003; Atlas of Variation 2013). It takes 17 years to get research evidence into routine practice. (Balas Boren 2000)

  5. The issues • Despite good evidence, it is difficult to get changes into practice that improve quality of care. • Knowledge translation needs to occur within local systems of care. • Knowledge translation needs to be personalised to an individual’s needs.

  6. Strategic commitment • Help practitioners to apply knowledge to frontline practice. * Embed use of knowledge in healthcare improvement.* Support practitioners and managers to translate knowledge into better health outcomes • * Develop capacity and capability for translating knowledge into practice.

  7. What counts as knowledge? • How is knowledge generated? • Once knowledge has been produced, what makes people use it? • Does access to more knowledge actually help people to innovate or change? • How do new ideas travel from person to person, organisation to organisation?

  8. Please note down a situation from the past where you were involved in implementing a guideline or other form of evidence in practice • At the end of today we will see how what you have learned might change your approach.

  9. Dynamic approach
