Introduction This lesson is based on the following Kindergarten Language Arts Content Standard in Ohio: Phonemic Awareness, Word Recognition and Fluency: Distinguish the number of syllables in words by using rhythmic clapping, snapping or counting. In this lesson, students will learn to count syllables by clapping their hands. They need some background experience with what a vowel is, but I cover it at the beginning vaguely. Lesson Today we are going to learn how many syllables are in a word. The number of vowels a word has is usually equal to the number of syllables it has. Do you remember what a vowel is? Click here to find out! I U E a O Home Next
Circle the vowels to help you find the number of syllables. Remember that silent E’s do not count! Click here to see what it looks like to circle the vowels in the word, “kitten.” Kitten Home Back Next
Circling vowels is helpful, but now it’s time to clap! Clap your hands while you say a word out loud. Try clapping out “butterfly.” Butt-er-fly While saying butterfly, you clap 3 times. There are 3 syllables in butterfly. Home Back Next
