LONG ISLAND UNIVERSITYLIBRARY SERVICE TO THE ROCKLAND CAMPUS Locating Books and Requesting Them by Paul Tremblay, Off-sites Coordinator (718) 246-6382 Ingrid Wang, Coordinator of Technology and Information Services (718) 488-1680
This presentation will cover: • Online Catalog Searching & Book Request Form
A Few Easy Steps: Overview • Locate the material (LIUCAT) • Fill the online form, click on submit (do not forget your library barcode) • Even if the material is not owned by LIU, fill in the form and we will try to locate it and ship it to you.
Welcome to the Library Homepage.1. First go to the Rockland homepage, click on the “Library” icon (lower left corner) 2. Et voilà! 1. 2.
Very important (But Easy)! • LIUCAT, what does it do, & what it does NOT do… • LIUCAT Searches for Books, Journals Titles, Video Material within LIU’s holdings…It does NOT search the content of periodicals • If you are looking for periodical articles, you should click on “Online Databases” off our library page.
If you happen to know the title or the author, use “Title Keyword” or “Author Keyword”
Use “Subject Keyword” if you are looking for material about a specific topic (for instance, do we own books about the Civil War).
You’re looking for Psychology by Ludy T. Benjamin. Should you start with “General Keyword”?
The search for“General Keyword”: Psychologywill yield too many hits as the search engine looks into every field in the database.
Hint: you can combine fields:“Author Keyword” AND “Title Keyword”, for example. Click on “Advanced”
“Advanced Search” Combines fields:“Author Keyword” AND “Title Keyword”, for example.
Search for “Title Keyword”: “Psychology” AND “Author Keyword”: “Benjamin”
Good News: 33 hits only! • Scroll down until you find your book!
An Interesting Feature: The Alphabetical List of Titles, Authors, Subjects, etc. (like browsing like the old-fashioned Card Catalog)
Example: Materials with “Psychology” as the first word in the Title:
This is how a “record” looks like: The record will show you the Campus and the call number of the item (shelf location)
The next step is to fill the form specifically designed for the Westchester Graduate Campus. Click Here
Westchester Interlibrary Loan Forms • To Obtain Books, Journal Articles (even if not owned by LIU; in a nutshell, use the Westchester ILL form, regardless of library’s ownership! It is not a privilege, it is a right!) • See the other PowerPoint tutorial about obtaining journal articles (the procedures are almost similar).
The “Book Request Form” • Do not forget your LIU Library Barcode
What happens after • Once you click on “Submit”, we will search and obtain the item, call you and send it to the Westchester Campus Reception Desk. • Important: please abide by the “Due Date” notice, especially for material obtained outside LIU. We have to respect other loaning institutions.
One More Thing About Library Barcodes… • Barcodes • Also necessary for using databases off-campus (from home or from work, not from the campus)
Online Reference? • You may chat with a Reference Librarian off our webpage. • You may also email us with your reference questions: just use the email module off the same page. • Or, email Paul.Tremblay@liu.edu, or call at 718 246-6382 • Reference Desk Phone Number: • 718 780-4513
