Setting • The story takes place on the streets of Oklahoma. The characters are very “hood” like. The setting matches the story because the fast life in the city, supports the way the characters act in the story. If the author didn’t say/put that they were in the streets of a town or city, the readers wouldn’t understand the reasons why the characters act the way they do.
Conflict • The Greasers and Socs don’t get along so well. There’s a rivalry going on between the two gangs that causes tension. They plan a large rumble between the groups, just to have the ability to claim whose tougher than the other. The types of conflictare, man v man and also man v society.
Summary of Plot • The story takes place on the streets of Oklahoma. The Socs are a vicious gang of rich kids who dislike the Greasers. The Greasers are a gang that is economically below the Socs. They don’t have as much as the Socs do. Both of the groups always try to find a way to beat each other up in the story. In the beginning of the story The Socs attempt to jump Ponyboy while he’s on the street. Throughout, the whole story they go back and forth fighting each other. In the story Johnny gets hit with wood, causing sever damage to his back and dies. After the Johnny incident; Two-bit, Darry, Dally, Ponyboy, and Soda get in a big rumble with the Socs. After the fight Dally goes and robs a convenient store. He gets chased by police and decides to pull out an unloaded gun.Dally gets shot by the police.
Point of View • The book is written in the 1st person point of view because the story is told by Ponyboy. In the book he describes how he feels, what he thinks and what he does.
Theme • Life can go on if you continue to believe in what’s good in life. • Text Evidence 1: “All Socs aren’t like that,” (Cherry) Pg.34 • Text Evidence 2: “Cherry had said her friends were to cool to feel anything, and yet she could remember watching sunsets. Pg.115-116 (Ponyboy) • Text Evidence 3: “Stay gold Ponyboy. Stay gold…” (Johnny) Pg.148
Symbolism Friendship and Family. It always good to have friends that always have your back.
Recommendation • The Outsiders was a great book, that teaches a lot of life-lesson. I would recommend it because it is exciting and suspenseful. Also, it reminds me of how things are in our world today so kids today can relate to this story.
