WHAT IS SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY • An individual or company has an obligation to benefit their community or society. • Acting in such a way as to not negatively affect those around you. • Embracing the responsibility of your actions. • Can be passive by not engaging in certain acts or active by directly participating in activities that move towards goals. • Experienced a popularity surge due to increase in ethical consumerism

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT? • It maintains balance between the economy and the ecosystem. • While making money is not the principal concern, it is what keeps the process going. • Companies may focus on their workers, consumers, local communities, and the world. • If everyone does their part individually, then the pieces should fall into place for the bigger picture. • Brand loyalty and a large source of public relations building

GREAT MOUNTAIN COFFEE • #1 Corporate Citizen, as rated by the CRO.com, 2 years in a row • Green Mountain Coffee Roasters is dedicated to responsible energy use, reduction of solid waste, ecological packing initiatives and eliminating poverty and hunger in the communities that supply Green Mountain with beans. • Their fully compostable container coffee cup (which is made from corn) prevented over one million pounds of petrochemicals from entering out landfills and seeping into the earth. • One of the world’s largest sellers of Fair Trade Coffee.

WHATS HAPPENING IN UGANDA • 2 milliondisplaced • 1986 LRA began torturing individuals, burning villages, abducting children • LRA has recruited 66,000 youth • 1996 Ugandan government forced 1.8 million into IDPcamps • Filled with disease, poverty, malnourishment • Recently have been allowed to return home but found little hope • Growing need for actions to counter poverty, offer hope and establish sustainability

THE FACE OF HOPE • Kallie Dovel traveled to Uganda in 2007 • Met women making paper beads but lacked a plan to market and sell them • Spent the next year dreaming up a concept of a development organization • was formed • In 2008 selected 6 women to buy from on a monthly basis • In just three years 31 Bits has grown to 99 women
