Types of Mentoring Programs • Building Level • Classroom Level • Targeted Small Groups • Targeted Individuals • Specific Events or Activities
Building Level - Clinton • Building Partners Larger community businesses- (Hawthorn Bank, Transcontinental, GVMH, Pathways Behavioral Healthcare) Give time, talent and/or treasure to meet the needs of the students and staff of a particular school. Build relationship with the “school”
What Do Building Partners Do? • Employees serve as Lunch Buddies • Serve on Site Council • Provide incentives • Host collection drives • Help when volunteers are needed • Donate personal hygiene items • Become a part of the school family • Hospitality for teachers during conferences
Building Level - Mexico • Building Partners Every building in our district has at least one business partner. Every building in our district has at least one faith based partner.
What Do Business Partners Do? • Sponsor assemblies • Present awards • Welcome students on 1st day • Provide incentives • Decorate • Help when volunteers are needed • Provide holiday goodies/treats • Become a part of the school family
What Do Faith Based Partners Do? • Partnered to provide a blanket for every student at McMillan. • Provided funds to purchase clothes for the CARE Closet. • Provided a “Welcome Back Luncheon” for faculty and staff in August. • Provide a monthly word of encouragement and treat in the faculty and staff mailboxes. • Donated items for Santa’s Workshop. • Volunteers have helped at Santa’s Workshop, Tyrone Lue Day of Service, Popsicle Friday & Book Gotcha Days. • Provide popsicles once a month for a grade level at Popsicle Friday. • Provided a hand sanitizer for each classroom and area of the school.
Classroom-level Clinton • Classroom Partners Smaller businesses, church groups, civic groups, families Give time, talent and/or treasure to meet the needs of a particular classroom Build relationships at classroom level
What Do Classroom Partners Do? • Provide projects , crafts, games • Bring holiday or birthday treats • Share about their organization • Join in parties, celebrations, etc. • Help with service learning • Encourage the students • Teach a new skill/Supplement classroom lesson • Read to the students
Classroom-level Mexico • Corporate HR Directors teaching interview skills to students. • Manufactures work with vocational classes. • Businesses offering the special education class job training.
Targeted Small Groups - Clinton • Reading Pals • Building Partners volunteer to come in on a monthly/bi-weekly basis to read books to their assigned class. - Oftentimes these books supplement a current unit of study. • Build relationships with the students in your group
Targeted Small Groups, cont. • Character Ed Basketball Camp -Anyone can volunteer, including building sponsors and classroom partners -Work with specific small groups on basic basketball skills while promoting positive character - Build relationships with the students in the groups
Targeted Small Groups - Mexico • Princess Party Young ladies are taught manors, good etiquette, proper hygiene, treated to a makeover and new clothes. Super Hero Party Young men are taught how to be a gentleman, how to tie a tie, lashing, and good hygiene
Targeted Small Groups, cont. • Monthly lunch meetings with students in the alternative school. • Career exploration and college visits with alternative school students. • Cosmetology students mentoring children on hygiene and offering haircuts and manicures to students that are able to improve attendance.
Targeted Individuals • Volunteers/Mentors can be anyone, including building sponsors and classroom partners • Give time to work with specific students on specific needs • Build relationships with specific students
Types of Targeted Individual Mentoring Programs - Clinton • Lunch Buddies/Lunch Pals • Come have lunch with your student on a monthly basis • Support and encourage your student • Be a positive adult role model • Be a listener
Individual programs, cont. • Study Buddies/Book Buddies • Come work with/ read with a student on a weekly basis (or as often as possible) • Support and encourage the student • Be a positive adult role model • Be a listener
Types of Targeted Individual Mentoring Programs - Mexico • Lunch Buddies – Serve students k-8 Commit to lunch 2-4 times a month • Monday Mentors – Lunch Mentor program for high school students. • After School Tutoring at Middle School • Mentors help student complete profile at Missouri Career Center upon graduation.
Specific Events/ Activities, Clinton • Activities such as: • Donuts with Dads/ Muffins with Moms • Family Fun Day • Attendance Celebrations • Positive Behavior Incentive Parties • Character Ed/Student of the Month assemblies
Special events, cont. • Volunteers/mentors can be anyone, including your building sponsors, classroom partners, and mentors from other programs. • Give time , talents and or/treasure to mentor students as needed for specific activities/events • Be a positive adult role model
