If you’re new to Six Sigma, the concept is probably very confusing. There are three levels of Six Sigma Certification – Green Belt, Black Belt and Master Black Belt – these levels all address the Six Sigma principles to a varying degree of intensity. Introduction
What is Six Sigma? Six Sigma started as a problem-solving approach to reduce variation in a production and manufacturing environment. Six Sigma principles are not about quality in the traditional sense. Quality is defined traditionally as conformance to internal requirements. Six Sigma is about helping organizations make more money by improving customer value and efficiency.
Basics of Six Sigma Principles The Six Sigma principles refer to a highly disciplined process that focuses on developing and delivering near-perfect products and services consistently. The term “Sigma” is used to designate the distribution about the average of any process. In Statistics, “σ” is the symbol to depict population standard deviation.
DMAIC Principles A D I C CONTROL M IMPROVE MEASURE DEFINE ANALYZE
DEFINE The purpose of this step is to clearly pronounce the business problem, goal, potential resources, project scope and high-level project timeline. This information is typically captured within project charter document. Write down what you currently know. Seek to clarify facts, set objectives and form the project team.
MEASURE The purpose of this step is to objectively establish current baselines as the basis for improvement. This is a data collection step, the purpose of which is to establish process performance baselines. The performance metric baseline(s) from the Measure phase will be compared to the performance metric at the conclusion of the project to determine objectively whether significant improvement has been made. Good data is at the heart of the DMAIC process.
ANALYZE The purpose of this step is to identify, validate and select root cause for elimination. A large number of potential root causes of the project problem are identified via root cause analysis. The top 3-4 potential root causes are selected using multi-voting or other consensus tool for further validation D D D D D
IMPROVE The purpose of this step is to identify, test and implement a solution to the problem; in part or in whole. This depends on the situation. Identify creative solutions to eliminate the key root causes in order to fix and prevent process problems.
CONTROL The purpose of this step is to embed the changes and ensure sustainability, this is sometimes referred to as making the change 'stick'. Control is the final stage within the DMAIC improvement method.
