FHSP - What’s an Endorsement? • An endorsement is essentially a sequence of courses in a career cluster that will better prepare our students for a career they are potentially interested in (think college major). • Students will be required to earn an endorsement in the one of the following areas: • STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) • Business and Industry • Public Services • Arts and Humanities • Multidisciplinary Studies

  5. FHSP – Endorsement For Example: A student wanting to be a welder will earn a “Business and Industry” endorsement and complete the following sequence of courses: 9th Grade: Bus. Info Mgmt 10th Grade: Welding I 11th Grade: Welding II 12th Grade: Wisenbaker Practicum For Example: A student wanting to be an engineer will earn a “STEM” endorsement and complete the following sequence of courses: 9th Grade: Princ of Engineering 10th Grade: Engineering Design 11th Grade: Robotics I 12th Grade: Robotics II CTE Flow Chart

  6. Required Assessments Algebra I (9th) English I (9th) Biology (9th or 10th) English II (10th) US History (11th) All students must meet at least the level 2 standard on all 5 EOCs to meet graduation requirements. Retests are in December, July, and taken with the Spring Administration.

  7. EOC/STAAR Exemptions • 9th graders will take the • PSAT 8/9 on October 10th • IF their Math score is 450+, a student does not have to take the • Algebra 1 EOC in May • IF their Reading/Writing score is 410+, student does not have to take the • English 1 EOC in April

Course Selection day • Course selection day will be held on Friday, January 18th & will consist of teachers giving their students recommendations for next years classes • Students will then have until early February to make any changes • Confirmation of Course Selections for 2019-20 will be given to students in early March

Credit Options • Average to Pass (65 1ST semester + 75 2nd semester = 70) • Humble ISD Summer School (Recovering failed credits only, $175-200) • On Campus Credit Recovery (11th and 12th grade, takes place of elective) • After School Credit Recovery (Begins Oct 10th, Tues & Thurs 3-5, $75) • Texas Tech Correspondence Course (Online, anywhere from $150-$250) • Texas Tech Credit By Exam • Recovering a failed credit ($40) • Acceleration/Testing Out (Free of charge, students must make $80%) • Retake Course • Dual Credit Academy (Offered over the summer at an Humble ISD campus, offers opportunity for students to receive high school & college credit)

The Importance of The PSAT – 10/10/2018 Freshman and Sophomores • Free practice for the SAT • Receive feedback on strengths and weaknesses • Provides opportunity for 9th graders to exempt out of Algebra & English 1 EOC/STAAR tests Juniors • Can qualify for National Merit Scholarships • Additional practice for SAT • Juniors not registered will take alternate assessment online & attendance is required

College Admissions Testing SAT – www.collegeboard.org Perfect score is a 1600 (800 on math & 800 on reading/writing) Offers 44% more time per question on Reading but passages are more complex than ACT More algebra & less geometry than the ACT No penalty for guessing ACT – www.act.org Perfect scores is a 36 Standalone science section For students who rely more on calculators & enjoy geometry No penalty for guessing *Colleges will accept either *See handout for additional details about the 2 different tests

COLLEGE ADMISSIONS The main criteria colleges consider when reviewing for acceptance: Grades in AP/Dual classes Rigor of High School Curriculum SAT or ACT scores GPA and class rank Additional considerations: Awards/Achievements Community Service Extracurricular Activities Letters of Recommendations Clubs/Organizations (Flex Lunch) Club ScheduleClub Description *Please review the individual college website you’re interested in

Important Events • College Night October 2nd - Humble Civic Center 6:30-8:30 pm • Seniors Fall - College Guidance with Counselors Spring - Lone Star advisors will be here to help our students fill out an application and register • Parent Nights November 5th: 8th grade Parent Night January 28th: 9th,10th,11th Parent Night • Career & Tech Fair (CATE Expo) February 5th, 4:00-8:00pm

  18. Pass/Fail • Beyond Graduation Requirements • CANNOT pass/fail dual credit classes • Course grades are not included in GPA • Eligibility is still based on course grade • Advantageous for only small % of students • Conference with your counselor before deciding • Deadline is one week after first report card: • 11/2/18 & 3/29/18 • Must apply for each semester

  20. Want College Credit? • Three options for college bound students! • 1. Dual Credit – All Year • -Requires passing scores on TSI Assessment • -Earn up to 6+ hours of college credit per class • 2. College Prep & Dual Credit – Spring • -Does not require passing score on TSI Assessment • -Earn up to 3 hours of college credit per class • -No Remedial classes once you enter college • -Options include English 4, College Algebra, & Stats • 3. AP Classes • -Take the AP test in May • -If student receives a certain score, they can receive college credit • (each university has different requirements on what they’ll accept)

The Texas Success Initiative (TSI) • State legislated program designed to improve student success in college by requiring all students attending public institutions in higher ed. to complete assessments in reading, writing, and math before enrolling in class (unless TSI exempt) • Lone Star College administers the TSI assessment • Prior to being placed in dual credit classes, students must either pass the TSI or be TSI exempt • TSI exemption: Students can be TSI exempt by making certain scores on the ACT, SAT, or STAAR *All Juniors in level English 3 will take the TSI here on campus in the Spring

Dual Credit Basics • Potential Dual Credit students must: • Add Dual Credit class to Choices 360 • Ms. Herbst will speak to dual credit students and tell them exactly what needs to be done (apply to Lonestar, take TSI, etc.) • See Counselor about College Prep Course if students do not meet TSI Requirements • Follow college guidelines when dropping a dual credit course.
