Motivations and barriers Time - 50.7%; Inappropriate provision - 37.3%, Lack of funding - 11.6% ‘The bitter truth is that supervisors do not really care about PhD students’ career planning or professional development. All they want from us is to do research and publish. Once, my supervisor (ex now!) advised me to lock myself in a room and write. How would possibly that help my professional development or career planning?’ ‘They showed little to no interest. “Do your PhD,” they said. “Everything else comes afterwards.” ‘I am concerned that engaging in too many personal and professional development activities will take up too much of my time and prevent me from completing the PhD before my funding runs out.’ ‘Completing all requirements for a PhD in three years is incompatible with any substantial career development (i.e. teaching, presenting at conferences, publishing), so that the ‘employability’ factor undoubtedly suffers if completion is on time — and, by the same count, timely completion suffers if enough time is to be spent on career building and employability.’  ‘Careers services are available but I am yet to find one advisor with knowledge about postdoc careers. […] Resources are condescending and aimed at people with less qualifications.
