INTERREG – THE FUTURE • Current programmes end in 2013 – spending can occur until June 2015. • New funding period :– 2014 -2020 • Territorial Co-operation Regulation proposed by European Commission as part of the Structural Funds regime. Support from Member States. • Territorial Co-operation split into the same three strands :- Cross-Border; Transnational and Inter-regional.
COMMISSION PRIORITIES • The European Commission wishes to see more flexibility in Programme construction • This will allow programmes to tailor their programmes to regional needs • The European Commission has suggested 11 objectives with each programme area choosing four priorities from the 11
PROPOSED OBJECTIVES • Research, Technological Development and Innovation • Access to ICT • Competitiveness of SMEs • Low Carbon Economy • Climate Change Adaptation • Protecting the environment and promoting resource efficiency
PROPOSED OBJECTIVES (2) • Sustainable Transport • Promotion of Employment and labour Mobility • Social Inclusion and Combating Poverty • Education, Skills and Lifelong Learning • Efficient Public Adminstration and Institutional Capacity
FUTURE OF SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITIES AND PLACE KEEPING • Sustainable communities not included in current proposal • Difficult to fit sustainable communities in current objectives • Sustainable communities link with transnational impact sometimes difficult to establish • Can place-keeping fit into other Commission objectives?
