ABOUT AUSTRALIA • Pop.: 21,828,704 (as of 2009) • Religion: 94% Christian (any denomination), 6% Buddhist, Islamic, Hindu, and Jewish • Constitutional Monarchy w/ Federal divisions, Parliament, Queen Elizabeth II • Free-market Economy, low poverty rates • In the beginning (45,000 years ago was the first recorded inhabitants), population decrease rapidly due to diseases. Gold rush in the 1850’s. Population increased rapidly after WWI. • Mostly desert (outback), southeast coast is where most of the mountains, beaches, and temperate areas are. • 80% Australian English, The rest being Italian, Greek, Cantonese, and over 70 indigenous languages. • Australian Dollar : American Dollar ~ 1.0072 : 1.00 • No Travel Requirements • The best time to visit Australia depends on what activities you are going to do. For mountain biking or surfing, fall or winter is best.
ABOUT AUSTRALIA cont… • Indigenous cuisine –native berries, fruits, fish, kangaroo, and insects (such as grubs) • The first British settlers introduce European food. Then later, Mediterranean food and Asian foods were introduce by more immigrants. • Vegemite-Australian icon-yeast extract spread (like peanut butter, but it’s not.) • Other Aussie icons are kangaroos, Holden cars, and the digeridoo.

INTERESTS AND ATTRACTIONS • Sydney Opera House-1956 official start of the designing process. Opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1973. Designed by Jørn Utzon, it is now considered one of the world’s greatest architectural achievements. • Outback- many unique animals such as the kangaroo, dingo, and Tasmanian devil. One of the largest fossil sites in the world.
ATTRACTIONS cont…. • Bondi Beach- Bondi is an aboriginal word meaning “water breaking over the rocks”. It is one of the most popular beaches in southeastern Australia. • Blue Mtns.- The fourth area in New South Wales to be named a World Heritage Site. Jenolan Caves are located in the Blue Mtns. • Great Barrier Reef- 2900 individual reefs, making up the largest reef system in the world. World’s biggest single structure made of living organisms. Forms 900 islands that spread for 1600 miles along the coast of northeast Australia.
CURRENT EVENTS • $61 million anti-smoking advertisement campaign to be launched. This is due to multiple cases of lung cancer in Australia. • A huge cyclone recently hit the northeast coast, after they already suffered billions of dollars worth of flood damage.

DAYS 8-10 • Camp breakfast, lunch, and dinner and Mtn. biking all day in the Blue Mtns. Trails range from 30km-120km, Medium-Expert • Camp breakfast, lunch, and dinner on day 9 • City riding around Sydney, Scenic sidewalk trails 85km • Camp breakfast, lunch and dinner on day 10 • Morning mtn. biking and packing in the afternoon to go home
