  8. 3. Training • HR creates and manages all aspects of training • Orientation • On-going • Retraining • Specialized training • Purpose: productivity and employee satisfaction

  9. Why spend money to keep employees?

  10. 4. Employee Retention Why spend money to keep employees? • Expensive to recruit and train employees for your COMPETITORS • Time consuming • New employees are NOT productive. High employee turnover means you are constantly being less productive

  11. Employee Retention Strategies • Promote from within whenever possible • Development and training • Empowerment • Small perks: casual dress codes, daycare services, wellness programs

  12. 5. Compensation • Compensation is one of the most important considerations for employees • Labor market is competitive and compensation changes based on supply and demand • Examples of compensation: • Hourly Wages • Salary • Commission • Incentives/bonus • Performance based pay (piecework) • Contract • Royalty/licensing

  13. 6. Departures and Retirement All employees eventually leave. HR’s role is to make the transition as easy as possible for both parties to maintain reputation of the employer. • Voluntary Departure: employees leave on their own for many reasons – personal/family reasons, dissatisfied, better opportunities elsewhere • Retirement: occurs when an employee voluntarily withdraws from the labor market – usually at a certain age when they qualify for a pension

  14. Dismissals • Employee layoff: companies may dismiss employees to cut back on expenses • Such employees may receive a severance package • Employees may be dismissed for not fulfilling their duties as required • Prior to the dismissal, employers record attempts it has made to work with the employee to correct the behavior • After a set period of time, the employee must show improvement or be dismissed
