  2. Permanent Limited Duty (PLD) Per MCO P1900.16F, a Marine who has been found UNFIT by the Physical Evaluation Board (PEB), and has accepted his/her finding, may request to remain on active duty in a PLD status. There are three categories of PLD: • Retirement PLD • Short-term PLD • Expanded PLD

Retirement and Short-term PLD Requirements Retirement PLD Short-term PLD • Typically over 18 yrs but less than 20 yrs of active service • Over 16 yrs but less than 18 yrs with a disability rating below 50% • Desires to achieve retired status • Fulfill needs of service – continuity in billet • Complete active service obligation for education and training • Other justifiable reasons supported by CO Both require: • Able to function in normal military environment • Does not require an inordinate amount of medical care; Disabling condition is stabilized • Reevaluation required for assignment greater than 12 months • Marines assigned to PLD are expected to contribute to the effectiveness of the Marine Corps and maintain proper military appearance and weight control

  4. Request for PLD Status • Must be submitted within 15 days of the Marine accepting his/her PEB’s finding of UNFIT for duty • Must include an endorsement form the Marine’s Commanding Officer • Final determination is made by the Commandant of the Marine Corps

  5. Expanded Permanent Limited Duty (EPLD) MARADMIN 228/06 authorizes an expanded form of PLD for those Marines who have received an injury directly or indirectly as a result of hostile action, and not a result of their own personal misconduct. • Must be capable of performing in a military occupational specialty • Passing all or part of the physical fitness test and/or being worldwide deployable are NOT prerequisites for retention • Retention and suitability of EPLD Marines will be determined by selection board recommendation to the CMC
