Understanding the 3D Printing Techniques and Processes 3D printing refers to a host of technologies and processes used to create objects and products designed in a digital environment using a 3D printer. The most common type of 3D printing process involves layering down thin layers of material to form a 3D object that has been created using Computer-Aided Design (CAD) representation. 3D printing works in two fundamental ways; creating new shapes by adding layers of materials and manipulating objects in their digital format. 3D Printing Processes Some of the most common 3D printing processes include; Stereo lithography (SL), Digital Light Processing (DLP), Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), Inkjet, and Selective Deposition Lamination (SDL), and Electron Beam Melting (EBM). Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) is currently the most popular process being used in 3D printing. FDM was developed in the 1980s and has since found its way into both commercial and personal 3D printers. FDM allows for the creation of both prototypes and ready-for-use products such as plastic gears and Lego. 3D printers that use the FDM process construct objects by extruding layers of thermoplastic filament onto a heated surface. The object is designed using Computer-aided Design (CAD) programs and modeled by melting thermoplastic filament. Some of the sectors making use of FDM technology include toy manufacturers, food producers, and automobile industries, among others. The FDM printed pieces will have excellent heat resistance and mechanical strength, allowing them to be used as functional prototypes.
