  15. Disorders of Sexual Pain • These are the sexual pain disorders: • Vaginismus • It is a learned fear response due to painful intercourse. • <1% of Females • Dyspareunia • 14% of Females • 3% of Males

  16. Paraphilias DSM-IV TR: • At least 6 months of: • Recurrent, intense, sexually arousing fantasies, sexual urges, or behaviors involving: • nonhuman objects, • the suffering or humiliation of oneself or one's partner, • children or other non-consenting persons.

  18. Transvestic Fetishism • Not GID, not Transsexualism

  19. Exhibitionism • A paraphilia in which persons have repeated sexually arousing urges or fantasies about exposing their genitals to another person, and may act upon those urges.

  20. Voyeurism • A paraphilia in which a person has repeated and intense sexual desire to observe unsuspecting people in secret as they undress or to spy on couples having intercourse, and may act upon these desires.

  21. Frotteurism • Characterized by fantasies, urges, or behaviors involving touching and rubbing against a non-consenting person. • Almost always male.

  22. Pedophilia • A paraphilia characterized by fantasies, urges, or behaviors involving sexual activity with a prepubescent child, usually 13 years of age or younger. • Evidence suggests that two-thirds of victims are female.

Sexual Masochism & Sadism • MASOCHISM: characterized by repeated and intense sexual urges, fantasies, and behaviors that involve being humiliated, beaten, bound, or otherwise made to suffer. • SADISM: characterized by repeated and intense sexual urges, fantasies, and behaviors that involve inflicting suffering on others.

A word of caution… • The definitions of paraphilias, like those of sexual dysfunctions, are strongly influenced by the norms of the particular society in which they occur… • IN CLASS EXERCISE (for attendance credit): • Write down on a piece of paper, with your name on it, your answer to the following question: In your opinion, what sexual paraphilias should be considered disorders and why? Which shouldn’t and why?

Gender Identity Disorder • People with this disorder persistently feel that they have been assigned to the wrong biological sex. • They would like to remove their primary and secondary sex characteristics and acquire the characteristics of the opposite sex • Men with GID outnumber women 2 to 1 • People with GID often experience anxiety or depression and may have thoughts of suicide • Onset & Etiology
