  3. Experiment • Marie Curie with her husband examined activity in radium and pitchblende • It supported her theory that pitchblende is more radioactive than uranium • Particles of unknown radiation were found in pitchblende

  4. Analyzing • Pitchblende-form of the mineral uraninite • Uraninite- mixture of radium and uranium • Marie used the process of elimination to find out which combination of elements is in uraninite, radium and polonium

  5. Conclusion • In 1898, the Curie’s discovered radioactive elements radium and polonium • Radium was isolated by electrolysis or a solution of pure radium, chloride, employing a mercury cathode
