The True God Colossians 1:1-8
Colossians • Church planted through Epaphras • Under threat from false teaching • Paul— “an Apostle” writes to help • He writes down words from God
We Must Think Rightlyabout God • In our culture the word “god” has no concrete meaning for many • God is what is conceived in the imagination • What if God—the true God, thinks differently about this matter?
We Must Think Rightlyabout God • Apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of GOD • GOD the FATHER of our LORD Jesus Christ • Faith in Christ Jesus; Minister of Christ • Told of love in the SPIRIT
We Must Think Rightlyabout God • In the opening verses he mentions the three Persons of the Trinity • “God eternally exists as three persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and each person is fully God, and there is one God.” Wayne Grudem
We Must Think Rightlyabout God • The Doctrine of the Trinity teaches that God is PERSONAL and that God has dwelt for ETERNITY in a relationship of LOVE • God the FATHER; LORD Jesus—in reference to deity of Jesus
We Must Think Rightlyabout God • Any faith that does not teach that God is ultimately personal cannot be true. • The Trinity dwells in an eternal relationship of LOVE • The Son is fully God (Col. 2:9)
We Must Think Rightlyabout God • The Son has always been (John 1:1). • This truth excludes any faith from being true that says there was time when he was not or that He is less than fully God. • The Spirit is a Person as well who has existed for eternity (John 14:16)
We Must Think Rightlyabout God • This eternal God who did not need us chose to create and ultimately save a people • He is bringing them into oneness with Him; in an eternal, loving relationship with the Father, Son, and Spirit (John 1:12-13; Col. 1:12-13)
We Must Think Rightlyabout God • The Doctrine of the Trinity makes possible salvation being a GIFT FROM GOD • If God were not a trinitarian being, there would be no way for human sins ever to be forgiven.
We Must Think Rightlyabout God • The problem with all other approaches of humans trying to appease God is that we do not recognize how big is our problem • Something had to be done OUTSIDE OF US and something had to be done FOR US
