What is Dual Enrollment? • Allows eligible high school students the opportunity to earn high school and college credit simultaneously. • NOVA college courses may fulfill Virginia high school graduation requirements and begin a college transcript towards a degree or certificate program.
Types of Dual Enrollment • Contract Dual Enrollment • College courses taught in high school by a credentialed high school teacher during the school day. • Zero tuition if taken in the high school setting. • Class only contains DE high school students. • Concurrent Dual Enrollment • High school students take college courses on NOVA campuses. • Pay full tuition with this option ($183.25/per credit). • Taught by NOVA faculty on campus with curricular and DE students.
Benefits of Dual Enrollment • Receive high school and college credit with 1 course. • Avoid duplication of courses taken in high school and college. • Guaranteed college credit with a C or better. • Seamless transition from high school to college. • Lower the cost of college. • Use campus resources and participate in college events and activities.
Who is Eligible for DE? • High School Juniors and Seniors • Proof of English and Math College Readiness • Use PSAT, ACT, SAT, SOL scores to qualify. • Virginia Placement Test (VPT). • Meet additional Pre-Requisites for course enrollment. • Exceptional Freshman and Sophomores (on a case-by-case basis) • No Fs. • 3.25 GPA to enroll in transfer course. • 2.25 GPA to enroll in CTE/career track course. • Personalized recommendation letter and HS transcript.
What To Expect • Course rigor same as NOVA campus course. • Different grading policies • No + or - • Longer seat time in high school setting. • Typically more writing (i.e. ENG 111/112). • Different start and end dates than classes taught at the high school and college. • Pay close attention to drop/withdrawal dates • too many W’s on transcript may affect financial aid later on
Transferability • Gen Ed courses transfer to most VA colleges and to many other four-year institutions • Career/Technical (CTE) Courses designed to fulfill NOVA Career Studies Certificates • All colleges have specific policies regarding acceptance of transfer credits- check websites • Always check with college of choice!
DE at WL 2018-19 • MTH 154 Qualitative Reasoning (3 college credits) • MTH 161-162 Pre-calculus (6 college credits) • MTH 265 Vector Calculus (4 college credits) • MTH 266 Linear Algebra (3 college credits) • GOL 111 – 112 Oceanography (8 college credits) • CSC 200 Introduction to Computer Science (4 college credits)
DE Registration Process • Student must express interest to school counselor & Pick up your form with test scores already included. • Apply to NOVA and secure your 7-digit student ID #. • Intent to Enroll form- complete and submit to school counselor • requires student & parent signatures • must apply online to NOVA • Qualifying Scores- Counselor checks if student has eligible test scores- PSAT, SOL, ACT or SAT. • Virginia Placement Test (VPT)- If no eligible scores are found, student is referred to take VPT test at high school or on NOVA campus. We will test at WL on Tuesday & Wednesday – April 10 – 11. • Return signed form to your counselor and Director of Counseling will send all forms to NOVA DE Coordinator.
